We all know we need to reduce our use of plastic and the amount that gets thrown away. Cling film is bad for the environment and may contain toxins, it takes decades to biodegrade. It isn’t recycled and often ends up in land fill. Plastic ziplock bags are even worse. Tin foil is also used to wrap food but this is very high energy cost in production and can take 400 years to decompose. A great alternative to all these to wrap and prolong the life of food are beeswax wraps.
Beeswax reusable foodwraps are eco friendly and at the end of their life fully biodegradable. They can last over 12 months with normal use and can be rejuvenated. They are naturally antibacterial and have antifungal properties. As they are watertight, they lock in moisture but let food breathe naturally, plastic wrap can’t do this, beeswax wraps act like a natural skin for the food.
so the benefits of the wraps are;
1 - made from safe and natural materials.
2 - can be used over and over and over again
3 - are washable
4 - they can be composted at the end of their life or used as a natural fire starter.
5 - have natural properties to prolong the life of food.
6 - they can be used in the freezer too!
Lets face it, they are so much prettier than cling film, plastic bags or tin foil. I have been using for a while now and I am definitely converted and not going back! I use to buy lots of cling film and zip lock bags. I haven’t bought any since moving to these.
We all need to do our bit, and this is one of the easiest switches.
I have put up 3 videos below to show them in use. It’s so simple, you just warm them a little in your hands, then wrap them on the food as you would cling film. On containers the create a nice seal on the rim. They are ideal for packed lunches, bread, fruit, cheese and so much more.
The videos are just to show them in action ( I’m no videographer so please bare with me). I was using a small wrap, just an off piece left over from making my sets for the shop.
Any questions, do get in touch.
Please not beeswax food wraps are not suitable for raw meat or fish.
